The “disability maintenance instrument” was a government assessment tool that measured the level of a disability to match it with funding support.
As a director and writer, I oversaw research that explored the history of cataloguing and measuring 'the Other'.
Our performance was a narrative following a small diaspora, a group of animals leaving their home country for lack of water. At the border, they are assessed and sorted. Those who survive the process are caged in a repetitive work facility, where they become the subject of scientific analysis then disposed of. The group hatches a plan and makes their escape. As flood waters rise, engulfing the facility, they sail away.
