A new street art work was commissioned by the Victorian Government Level Crossing Removal Authority, for the Mountain Highway underpass.
Overseen by Knox City Council's Public Art Program, three indigenous artists were engaged, each representing one of three language groups of the Dandenong Creek catchment area.
A triptych was designed and painted direct to the walls of the new overpass. Graffix Creative supported and framed the design, and mentored disengaged students from Bayswater Secondary College to learn new skills and paint the murals. Artists ran workshops in indigenous culture and history.
Artists: Mandy Nicholson, Marbee Williams, Adam Magennis. Graffix Creative: Jimmy B & Carmen Davies. Knox City Council: Jo Herbig, Community & Public Art Officer
“What it became, incorporating the aboriginal elements, the school program etc… and the community and the meaning behind it all. The whole thing’s come out way beyond our expectations. Amazing progression. I think this has been run really well. From the (Alliance’s) side, this is fantastic community outcome.” Gavin Catto, Bayswater Level Crossing Alliance
